CHAT's project

Respite Care for Children with Complex and Special Needs

Residential Respite Care

In discussions with Health Professionals involved with families of children with complex and severe disabilities, it has been found that there is a huge unmet demand in Buckinghamshire for respite care. This unmet demand includes Residential Respite Care and also Respite Care in the Home.

There are now more and more of these children with complex health needs. This is because of the skills of the Paediatricians, together with new technology and equipment, which are enabling tiny premature babies (born at only 24 weeks in some cases) and babies born with brain deformities, to be able, not only to survive their own birth, but to live for a number of years.

The 24-hour ongoing care needed to look after a child with complex or special needs in the home is extremely demanding and exhausting for the parents and carers. Usually their homes are set up to accommodate the child, but then the parents feel that they cannot go away unless there is special residential care available.

Respite Care in the Home

Respite Care in the Home is also an essential help for these families because they cannot get baby sitters like normal families can. Their children will be doubly incontinent, may suffer from frequent seizures, may need oxygen to help them breathe, may be tube-fed and would need to be turned regularly if they are in bed.

Just a short break of 2-3 hours during the daytime or evening would make such a difference to the parents of special needs children. It would enable mums to go to the hairdressers, do some personal shopping, or just meet up with or visit some friends to have a chat and a cup of coffee.

It is considered that the quality of life for the children with severe complex health needs, their siblings and their parents living in Buckinghamshire would be greatly improved if there was more respite care available.

CHAT’s New Project

CHAT would like to fund through charitable fundraising, two Paediatric Nurses and two Specialist Health Care Assistants to provide additional respite care to enable families to take more regular breaks knowing that their disabled child is being well looked after.

The Specialist Nurses will be trained so that they can go into the homes of families with special needs children and offer the essential short breaks of 2-3 hours per day.

This is a huge task for the charity, especially at a time of financial hardship.

Don't forget, you can still raise much needed funds for CHAT by donating at the Just Giving website, please click on the link below.
